GAY INTEREST FILMS TEAM

The Art of Indie & Mainstream Filmmakers Celebrating the Diversity of the Gay Community Worldwide

A LAST MINUTE APPEAL FOR YOU TO HELP US SPRINT TO THE FINISH LINE JUST LIKE THE STAR IN . . .

" THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE "

As was announced on the Gay Interest Films site earlier in the month we have formed a team which we call GIFT (an acronym for Gay Interest Films Team) to participate in AIDS Walk 2009 a fund-raising event for Desert Aids Project .

This fund-raising effort is an urgent attempt to supplement critical funds that have been lost by recent budget cuts by the State of California in critical programs which address virtually all of the issues and needs that have evolved as a direct result of the AIDS/HIV epidemic.

The humanitarian mission of the Desert AIDS Project is to provide solid patient advocacy and support, medical and drug assistance, AIDS awareness and prevention programs and many other related aspects and needs created by the battle against this heinous disease. The Desert AIDS Project serves all men, women and children in need and in providing service transcend all social, political, race, ethnic and sexual orientation boundaries. AIDS is ambivalent to ALL boundaries so our response MUST be to “think globally and act locally”, a worthy principal to apply to all of the challenges facing us as human beings.

We feel that it is imperative that we do our part. AIDS has been an ever present and painful reality in many of our lives here and in the lives of the many that we have loved and lost. It is this reality that has prompted us to set a realistically attainable goal for our participation in AIDS Walk 2009 of $1,100 and we are now urgently asking the broad and diverse community that visits and utilizes the Gay Interest Films site to support us in our effort to achieve that goal.

So far the performance of our original appeal has been disappointing but we are hoping that the remainder of the story will unfold just like the classic "The Tortoise And The Hare" with our "community " in the starring role of the "Tortoise" making the determined and exciting sprint from behind to win the race!

For our site users, visitors and supporters, whether your visits are frequent or occasional, we ask you to please realize that the Gay Interest Films site is and always has been provided free of charge and without the clutter and distraction of advertisements. It is a passion and we make the results of that passion available to you with no other intent than it may serve your own discovery and growth and at the very least entertain you. We now ask that you acknowledge our "gift" to you by reaching into your own “coin purse” and pulling out some loose change to support our effort to give another type of "gift" to those whose circumstances in life have created a need. We respect that everyone's circumstances and ability to give is different so the size of your donation is irrelevant and any denomination no matter how small will be accepted with gratitude and appreciation.

If even a small percentage of the almost 260,000 individual visitors to the Gay Interest Films site were to donate a mere one dollar we will be able to meet our goal ten-fold. Currently we have only reached 12% of our goal of $1,100 and we only have until October 31 to achieve and hopefully break it!

Please help by being a part of the effort to achieve that success!

If AIDS has touched your own life in some way either directly or indirectly you must be aware of the fact and educate others that "AIDS IS NOT OVER!"

Please follow the SPONSOR ME NOW link in the purple box below to make your contribution and please consider forwarding this appeal and link to any and all within your own sphere of friends, family and loved ones encouraging them to join us.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of the need and your participation in our effort.

Robert, Drew, Eban and our special mascot who will walk with us, Sweet Pea

Desert AIDS Project

The economic challenges facing the men, women and children, our friends, family members and neighbors impacted by HIV/AIDS in California's Coachella Valley and the Desert AIDS Project which supports them are "local" but their "need" is universal.

We are "plucking" a local strand in the "web" that invariably connects us all with a message of that need.

Let’s see how clear and far the vibration of this strand resonates out through the "web". Walking with us virtually you can help and you don't even need to leave your desk or work up a sweat!

. . THE WALK . .

The scenic AIDS WALK route this year is through the historic Movie Colony of Palm Springs! Join the G.I.F.T. (Gay Interest Films Team) and stroll along the same paths and bi-ways that Cary Grant, Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore, Grace Kelly and so many others walked when the Movie Colony was the place that the "Stars" called home.

. . SOME OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD
"DIGS" . .

Camp Curtis

Architectural Gem... Built by Roy Fey in 1960, Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh affectionately nicknamed their home "Camp Curtis". This gated & private 3,204 sq ft home is on a 1/3 acre lot and is located in the Movie Colony neighborhood of Palm Springs. Post and beam construction with stunning architectural elements and magnificent use of glass allow this home to boast amazing mountain views.

Cary Grant's
Farmhou
se

The great movie legends are what made many fall in love with the big screen. And one of the greatest was Cary Grant. Talk about a piece of movie history. This 6 bedroom, 5 1/2 bath home was his retreat for 20 years. Built in 1927, the home has 6,000 square feet of living space and is a replica of a Spanish farmhouse.

This Movie Colony home boasts 5 fireplaces, guest wings, a studio and two driveways. There are not many of these 1920s Spanish-style homes left in Palm Springs so they are a precious piece of the area’s history. Wood floors, generous use of tile and exposed ceiling beams all add to the period feel of the home.

Dinah Shore's
Retreat

This was the singer and talk-show host Dinah Shore's home in the Movie Colony prior to the time she stopped hosting "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" in 1963. At that time she had a new "modernist" estate commissioned and built.

Local architect Donald Wexler, who designed Palm Springs International Airport in the 1960's, designed her new 7,000 sq ft modernist house, which has 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, fireplace, pool and spa on 1.3 acres.

Marilyn Monroe's
Hide-a
-Way

This Sand Acre Estate is one of the grande dames of the Movie Colony neighborhood. Upon entering through the fifteen-feet high Spanish wood gates and cobblestone motor court, one can only imagine the Hollywood glamor and luxury impressed on this estate.

The hacienda is surrounded by stucco walls, lush with fruit trees and greenery and vast lawns, behind which the San Jacinto Mountains rise. The terra cotta roofing tiles add to the warmth of the home. The tower bedroom complete with a small baclony is the room which is rumored to have been provided to Marilyn Monroe as her own discreet and private hideaway.

Frank & Nancy Sinatra's
Twin Palm Estate

Designed in 1947 by E. Stewart Williams for Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato, Twin Palms is a spectacular example of mid-century architecture in the heart of Palm Springs’ Movie Colony community. E. Stewart Williams created a masterpiece residence with seamless interior/exterior flow.

Twin Palms Estate is located just around the corner from residences once owned by Al Jolson, Jack Benny and Cary Grant. This luxury vacation rental estate boasts both luxury and historical and architectural significance.

If these walls could talk… indeed, the 4,500 square foot home was host to some of the valley’s most glamorous parties with Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, Phil Silvers, Mary Livingston, George Burns, Gracie Allen, and even the reclusive Greta Garbo.

The home was also witness to some of Sinatra’s most memorable bouts. One of the most outrageous was when Frank threw then-wife Ava Gardner’s possessions onto the driveway after she appeared at the house in an attempt to catch him with Lana Turner. The chip is still in the sink where Frank, while in a rage, threw a bottle.

Darryl Zanuck's Bunkhouse & Estate!

An authentic 1934 hacienda was originally the "bunkhouse" to the famed Darryl Zanuck estate, which remains untouched across the street. Nearly every movie star of the silver screen era has passed through the gates of this historic property to claim a horse to play on the polo field that is now the quiet street of Olivos. The estate was later acquired by the Ripley family as their weekend retreat and then by Mae Questel, the voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oil, who is fondly remembered for the legendary parties which she hosted.
